Life Is Unfair - Part 3

I don’t know if you caught this last week or not, but I briefly made the comment that, “Bad things happen to good people. And good things happen to bad people. We live in a broken world, and these are the consequences of that.”
Not sure how you felt about this passage but part 3 of Life is Unfair is all about this.

Why do bad things happen to good people?

How many times have we heard this sentiment? How many times have you said, thought or felt this? Maybe you’ve even lamented over this idea.

Maybe you’ve experienced it.

Parents lose their daughter to suicide, a father gets sick with cancer, a young boy gets hit by a car, a grandfather gets diagnosed with ALS, a mother’s baby is stillborn after an exhaustive journey to get pregnant.

But none of these people did anything to deserve this.

WHY?

Why so much suffering and pain?

Why are the good punished?

The book of Job is one of the great examples we have of someone who seems to have suffered for no reason. A good man, honorable, just, fair, pleasing in the sight of God, had his whole life ripped from him. Death, destruction, and despair became a motto in Job’s story.

“Consider now: Who, being innocent, has ever perished? Where were the upright ever destroyed? As I have observed, those who plow evil and those who sow trouble reap it.

Job 4:7-8 NIV

This verse highlights a false belief that I think we all carry around. That if you’re a good person, do good things, live a simple life, then all should go well.

There is something else meaningless that occurs on earth: the righteous who get what the wicked deserve, and the wicked who get what the righteous deserve. This too, I say, is meaningless.

Ecclesiastes 8:14 NIV

Another man, Solomon (the wisest man to ever live), also states here how the righteous get what the wicked deserve. I imagine him throwing up his hands as he writes this. Just frustrated with the way of the world.

“The world is unfair. Many wicked people are not punished in this life, while many righteous people suffer from the cradle to the grave. Wicked people live a life that looks comfortable. They seem not to suffer. They seem free from struggles. They seem to enjoy themselves. At the same time, many righteous people struggle in this world. They try to live for God, but life remains difficult. They give generously but experience seasons when they do not have as much as they need.”

(The Jesus Bible)

There are powerful forces at work in the world, forces from the kingdom of darkness that want to use our heartaches to cause us to doubt God’s goodness and his love for us.

“Therefore I will not keep silent; I will speak out in the anguish of my spirit, I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.

Job 7:11

I think we can reference this verse often when life seems unfair. When things seem to not be going the way they ought to go, or the way we believe they should go. We should not be silent. We should speak out against the evil. We should complain in the depths of our soul.

But who is listening?

He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

Isaiah 53:3 NIV

The Human One is.

Jesus.

Someone who lived as a man, suffered as a man, was rejected and despised. But he cares for us. He listens to us.

I love the Lord, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy.

Psalms 116:1

but God has surely listened and has heard my prayer.

Psalms 66:19 NIV

For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help.

Psalms 22:24 NI

Let us celebrate that in those moments when Life seems unfair, we have someone who is willing to listen.

But that is only a temporary relief. It doesn’t wipe our memories or heal our wounds from our hurts and hardships.

And so, I end this week with telling you the same thing I told you back in week 1 of this series…

“Life’s not fair!”

I imagine this is leaving you with eyes wide, breathing in deep and feeling a bit frustrated! Where is this going? Where is the relief?

Next week we wrap up this 4-part series on Life is Unfair. With the help from the Holy Spirit, I hope to put a nice bow on this series and highlight what I feel like is the main reason why Life is Unfair.

Stay tuned. One more week. 😀
