Three Little Birds

Don’t worry

About a thing

Because every little thing

Is gonna be all right

Bob Marley’s “Three little birds” is one of the most famous reggae songs in history.

When I hear Bob Marley sing this song it makes me a little envious. That he could live in such a way that he didn’t worry. I hear this song and think that he was just chillin. All the time. maybe partaking in a little extracurricular activity too often. (You know what I’m saying 😉)

The movie for Marley just came out a few weeks back and in the trailer his life looks a little tumultuous.

So, I think when he sang the song it wasn’t because that’s how he felt all the time. It was probably a way of coping. Of dealing with life. With stress, with busyness, with the human condition.

Possibly birthed out of an idea, a motto a mantra that got him to remember the small things.

  • Waking up in the morning.

  • Smiling at a rising sun.

  • Listening to 3 little birds, singing sweet songs.

Stop and smile. Take a breath. The sun rose today and brought with it a reminder that it is a new day.

A day to not worry. About a thing.

And with it also a sweet reminder that every, little, thing, will be alright.

I don’t know much about Bob Marley. I do love listening to his music when I’m feeling chill, relaxed and in the mood to just breathe. But I do imagine that he understood the message that Jesus says here in his most famous speech.

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”

Matthew 6:25-26 NIV

Maybe the 3 little birds Bob sang about were these same birds that Jesus spoke of.

Maybe Bob understood what Jesus was saying.

And just maybe, he wrote and played this song as a reminder to you, to me, to us, to not worry.

“Cause every little thing gonna be alright.”
